*MATCH REPORTS*
*GAME 1*
GCC won the toss and tactically elected to bat first, a decision which didn’t decide the match (our performance took care of that!) but certainly gave big hitting Malaga something to think about early on. A steady start from openers Richie and James and tight bowling got us to 10 off 2 overs but a blitz of boundaries and excellent well thought out running between the wickets got us up to 8 an over, which quickly become 10 per over that set the tempo for the rest of the innings. A great opening partnership got us to 100 in the 10th over which sadly ended with Richie starting to open up and being bowled by Malaga's best bowler Asif. A flawless running-between-the-wickets effort picked up crucial runs. James Davies (“I am going to get a century, I know it, I feel it!”) duly maintained the scoring majestically and at times effortlessly towards that goal which was achieved with 9 4's and 8 6's, and, in the process, truly disheartening a more than competent Malaga team confident of winning both games to claim the league. Todd came in and as always maintained his over 100 strike rate to add a quick 17, Mr. Consistent, Brett, got a great start hitting 18 off as many balls before sadly falling foul to a run out in an attempt to maintain our 10 per over rate. Welcoming back power-hitter Pep to the crease meant the scoring maintained its fervent pace. A record 33 runs off the 16th over helped to cement a solid total of 218 that gave our bowlers and fielders confidence of defending. James innings came to an end on a Granada CC record of 113.
Big hitting Malaga needed to reach a target of 219 and were, as expected, hitting the ground running. However, very tight accurate bowling from James, Todd and Brett helped reduce Malaga to only 35 from 5 overs with the loss of 3 key wickets with a nice catch from Paul. An excellent fielding performance helped replace boundaries with 1's or 2's and with our new and now established wickie Phil diving around stopping many more runs. Our bowling and fielding display restricted a mini mid order resurgence from Malaga, however they were scoring slowly to protect their wickets. Lastly, a super spell from Sebin followed with fast and straight bowling that knocked off 3 wickets to reduce Malaga to 159 for 7 off 20 Overs. Sammy finished off with two overs at the death to ensure a huge 59 run win for GCC!!
